Carter Lee Obituary, Death – Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins announced with deep sadness the untimely passing of two Peoria men, Carter Lee and Michael J. Whitaker, who tragically lost their lives in a boating accident on Saturday, July 8, 2023. The incident occurred when their boat capsized in a lake in the 5300 block of North Eden Road, Peoria. Carter Lee, 67 years old, and a resident of Missouri Ave in Peoria, was discovered unresponsive by rescue teams at approximately 3:45 PM. Despite the best efforts of the responders, Carter could not be revived, and he was pronounced deceased at 5:00 PM by the Peoria County Coroner.
During the course of the investigation, it was revealed that Michael J. Whitaker, also 67 years old, and a resident of W. Spring Hallow Lane in Peoria, was possibly fishing with Carter Lee at the time of the accident. Unfortunately, Michael was not initially located, and his family reported him missing to the Peoria Police Department. After extensive efforts, including the deployment of drones by Sheriff deputies and assistance from the Peoria Fire Department’s Dive Team, Michael’s body was found submerged in the lake on Sunday morning. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:12 AM by the Peoria County Coroner.
The circumstances surrounding the capsizing of the boat remain unclear, and Sheriff Watkins stated that there is currently no evidence of foul play. The Peoria County Coroner’s office will release further details, including the official cause of death, at a later time.
