Born in Morristown, John lived in Parsippany before moving to Roxbury Township. Later, he returned to Parsippany, where he raised his family. Throughout his life, John showed an unwavering dedication to his education and professional growth. He graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a Bachelor of Arts in Business and furthered his knowledge by earning an MBA from the University of Iowa, solidifying his expertise in the business field.

John’s career spanned over two decades at Prudential Financial, where he contributed significantly to the company’s success. He then transitioned to Express Scripts, where he served as a Product Director, utilizing his skills and experience to make a positive impact in the pharmaceutical industry.

While his professional accomplishments were noteworthy, John’s true legacy extends far beyond his career. He was a devoted husband to his late wife, Maribeth (nee Shirkey), and a loving father to his three children: Matthew O., John R. III, and Caroline E. Family meant everything to John, and he held a special place in his heart for each of his relatives.

Tragically, John faced heartache in his life, losing his beloved wife and mother, Janet (nee Barrett), as well as his in-laws, Robert and Christina Shirkey. However, through adversity, John displayed resilience and found strength in the support of his family, including his father, John R. Sr., and his siblings, Kevin (Theresa), Edward (Rose Ann), Mary Hawley, and Janet A. Hastings.

John’s dedication to his community and the people around him was evident through his active involvement in sports and charitable events. An avid runner and cyclist, he completed numerous races, participating in events like the New York City Marathon, where he ran for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s “Fred’s Team-Imagine a World without Cancer.” He also successfully completed the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC and the IRONMAN 70.3 ATLANTIC CITY Triathlon: Half Ironman, showcasing his determination and commitment to pushing his physical limits.

Aside from his athletic pursuits, John was known for his kind and generous spirit. He believed in giving back and making a positive impact in the lives of others. John’s charitable endeavors and active participation in various causes touched many lives, leaving a legacy of compassion and selflessness.

On April 22, 2023, friends and family gathered at St. Pius the X R.C. Church in Montville for John’s Liturgy of Christian burial, a fitting tribute to a man who lived a life guided by faith and love. He was laid to rest at Atlantic View Cemetery in Manasquan, where his memory will forever be cherished.
