Russell Lee Obituary, Death – It is with profound sorrow that we must inform you of the demise of our dear friend and colleague, Russell Lee. He was teaching his class at the Shades Valley YMCA when he suffered a heart attack yesterday evening, and he passed away as a result of it.
Since 1992, Russell Lee has been employed by our YMCA in both the Downtown and Shades Valley campuses in the capacity of a group exercise teacher. Before the Downtown membership closed on December 31, 2012, he had spent the most of his Y career working there, and he had a strong connection to the community there. In addition to working for our YMCA, he was a dedicated employee of the Birmingham Library system and an exceptional pianist who most recently served at the First Baptist Church of Fairfield.
He also worked for the Birmingham Public Library. He was a somebody who was committed to learning throughout his entire life and a supporter of further education. Russell had the love and admiration of a great number of people throughout Birmingham and beyond.
We ask that you join us in keeping Russell’s family and friends in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this difficult time.
In addition, please keep the staff and members of Shades Valley, some of whom were there on Monday evening and responded to this awful circumstance, in your thoughts and prayers so that they may find the strength they need. This loss serves as a poignant illustration of how precious and precarious life truly is. In honor of Russell Lee and the legacy he left behind in our community, we come together today.
