Somchan Somsanith Obituary, Death – Early on Friday, deputies in Spartanburg County shot and killed a man who was holding a child hostage. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office reports that around 3:20 a.m., they responded to a complaint about a fight involving firearms on Coldstream Dr. in Boiling Springs. The sheriff’s office reported that a child contacted 911 and stated that her father had a rifle and a shotgun and was threatening to shoot someone in the house as well as himself.
Upon arrival, deputies were able to communicate with another man inside the home, who confirmed the situation to them. Several additional kids were at home, he told the deputies. Deputy’s efforts to get in touch with him were fruitless. The guy and all but one of the kids reportedly escaped through a window, as reported by the sheriff’s department. The man began keeping the remaining child prisoner inside the house while he went in and out with a firearm, pointing it at the child, the deputies, and himself. “By the way,” stated Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright, “he was pointing weapons at his loved ones.”
“Not just anybody, his family and friends. The sheriff’s office claims that deputies shot and killed the hostage taker in self-defense. Somchan Dan Somsanith, 42, was pronounced dead at the site at around 4:30 a.m., per the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office. Nobody on the sheriff’s team was hurt. Unfortunately, he has passed away, but I will simply give gratitude and praise to the Lord that none of our deputies or hostages were wounded. There’s nothing I can say to make sense of this. We never intend to accomplish such a feat, but we must carry out our duties.
The presence of evil is an unfortunate reality that must be confronted on occasion. Several residents in the area reported hearing gunfire upon awakening. According to witness Zaelina Jeter, “it sounded like three or four consecutive gunshots.” It was a very loud boom, so I knew it was gunfire. I bolted upright in bed and ordered my son to get out of bed. According to the locals, this was a terrifying sight in an otherwise peaceful area. “It was real close,” Jeter admitted. Since the gunfire appeared to be headed in the direction of my immediate neighbors, I can imagine how unsettling it is for them. Law enforcement officials in South Carolina are still looking into what led to the incident.
